Connect To Spirit With Automatic Writing

automatic writing

One of the most effective ways to connect with your inner guidance or spirit is through automatic writing. It will deepen your spiritual practice and open your heart and mind to new ideas, suggestions and insights.

What is Automatic Writing?

Automatic writing is when you allow words to flow through you onto paper or even via a keyboard. You effectively shut off your thoughts and let your hand or hands take over. It is one of the easiest ways to develop your intuition and connect to the spiritual realm.

Channeling Spirit Through Writing

Automatic writing is a form of channeling. Whole books have been written using this kind of spiritual communication. “A Course in Miracles” is one very famous example. Helen Schuman, a clinical psychologist, describes the process of writing ACIM, as it is commonly called, as “a distinct and clear dictation from an inner voice, which earlier had identified itself to her as Jesus. Helen Schucman's scribing of A Course in Miracles began with these words: ‘This is a course in miracles, please take notes.’”

Using Automatic Writing as a Healing Process

Writing from the soul, without self-censoring, has proved to be beneficial to many people. What begins as an outpouring of emotions may sometimes transform into communication from spirit. It’s as if someone or something takes over your hand and produces messages of insight and comfort.

Healing Through Writing

How to Start Automatic Writing

A good way to begin is to practice ‘free writing’. Free writing is a technique that many writers use to clear their minds of clutter. They sit down, usually immediately upon waking, and write down a few pages of anything. They don’t think about it, they just allow the words to flow. You can do this too. Don’t worry about making that spiritual connection, simply play with letting words flow onto paper for a few days.

You might be surprised at the insights that appear on the page when you read it back later. Yet, you can take this farther by setting an intention to connect to your inner guidance. You could also think of this connection as your sub-conscious, your spirit guide, your guardian angel or the collective consciousness. Whichever concept works best for you.

Creating a Ritual

Automatic writing requires you to get yourself into the right frame of mind. You can’t sit down and expect the spirits to begin communicating immediately. It’s a good idea to  think about why you want to try it. Have you questions that need answers? Do you want to receive reassurance regarding someone who has passed? Would you like some clarification about an issue in your life?

Create a peaceful space. Minimize external distractions. Do whatever you do to get yourself into a relaxed state. A short meditation, or simply sitting quietly might help. Your aim is to be in a receptive trance, literally with an open mind ready to receive.

Formulate your question, if you have one, and write it down.

Set an intention to connect only with spirits who hold your well-being as a priority. Remember that your connection may be through your own intuition, via a spiritual guide or some discarnate entity. When the latter, you need to be protected against the lower kinds of entities. Automatic writing is akin to using a Ouija board, so be aware of the risks of inviting communication from unwanted spirits.

Beginning Automatic Writing

Start with a little free writing, as described above. Doesn’t matter what you write, it could be a shopping list, or the lyrics of a song. It’s only about getting your hand moving across the paper, or your fingers tapping on the keyboard. Let your mind wander. Don’t think about the words. You might find random thoughts floating through your mind like ribbons. Write them down and let them go.

Try not to pause in your writing. Softly focus on allowing your hand or fingers to be taken over. Some people close their eyes or look away from the page into the middle distance.

Automatic Writing: 10 Tips and Techniques

Don’t be disappointed if nothing of great interest or benefit comes out of your first sessions. It takes practice in the art of letting go. Once your intuition or spirit gets it that you are seriously looking for insights and answers, they will start to come.

You could begin by writing down the question, “What do I need to know about…?” Fill in the blank. You might have to repeat it over and over until something ‘clicks’ and you make the connection. From there on, the writing will flow.

Never throw your automatic writing away. Put it away and then revisit it after a few weeks or months. You might find that you wrote a passage which is completely pertinent to your current situation – a message to your future self, if you like?

  • Use a pen that writes comfortably and freely. A pencil may be a better choice.
  • Typing works well if you can touch type, or at least, be able to type fast. In some cases, staring at the keys is a good thing because you aren’t looking at the screen.
  • Keep a notebook near your bed. Often people will do automatic writing in a dreamlike state.
  • Don’t stress over it. A relaxed mind is far more likely to be able to connect than one that is trying too hard.
  • Ask aloud who is talking to you. Ask for a name. You might ‘hear’ your own name, or it might be a guide or spiritual entity. You might even recognize the name of a deceased loved one.
  • Forget about spelling, grammar and punctuation. It’s only about the words.
  • If you get a message, ask that it be confirmed by other means. For example, if you got a message about a place, look out for instances and repetitions of that place as you go about your normal day.

  1. Hello Troi, does one communicate with the same spiritual guide during an automatic writing session or does it change with every session? Thanks so much, Craig

  2. Hi Craig, I don’t know. For me it’s just ‘spirit’, not an individual consciousness. It probably varies for every one.
